Who we are
The City of Niles’ Main Street Initiative, formerly known as the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), was established in 1978 through Ordinance No. 251 of the Niles City Code. Powered by the Michigan Public Act No. 197 of 1975, the initiative was designed to revitalize downtown, encourage historic preservation, and foster economic growth. This act granted the DDA a wide range of powers, including acquiring property, developing plans, issuing bonds, and utilizing tax increment financing to fund improvements.
In 2001, the Niles DDA was rebranded as Niles Main Street, reflecting its expanded mission to energize the city's downtown area.
Niles Main Street is driven by a passionate board of 8 to 12 local citizens and business leaders, each serving 4-year terms. This team works in close collaboration with the city to implement the downtown redevelopment plan—a vision that’s continually evolving. Originally updated in 1988 and again in 1998, the plan features a dynamic set of interconnected strategies aimed at revitalizing the heart of Niles.
Some of these initiatives have already transformed the downtown area, while others are still in progress, ensuring that Niles continues to grow and thrive as a vibrant, attractive destination for residents and visitors alike.
